Lower the Supply Current in Your RS-232 System

Abstract: A historical perspective of RS-232 driver/receiver development from the 700mW-dissipation bipolar three-supply DS1488/DS1489 pair to today's low power 5mW-dissipation CMOS single-supply MAX1488E/MAX1489E pair. The RS-232 specification is detailed, and the concept of EIA/TIA-232 compatibility is introduced for +2.5V-supplied portable-device short-distance communications. Old and new device part numbers are given.
